Ian Fleming was a British writer and journalist best known for creating the fictional secret agent James Bond. Born into a prominent family in London, he worked in banking and journalism before serving in Britain’s Naval Intelligence Division during the Second World War. His wartime experience, including involvement in planning intelligence operations, later provided material and atmosphere for his fiction.
Fleming published his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1953. He went on to write a series of novels and short-story collections featuring the agent, combining espionage, international settings and contemporary Cold War concerns. The books became commercially successful and formed the basis of a long-running film series. Fleming also worked as foreign manager for The Sunday Times. Outside the Bond series, he wrote the children’s story Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang. He died in 1964, shortly before several of his final works were published.
