Published in 1958, Dr. No is Ian Fleming’s sixth James Bond novel. Bond is sent to Jamaica to investigate the disappearance of British Secret Service station chief John Strangways and his secretary. His inquiries lead him towards Crab Key, a privately owned island controlled by the reclusive Dr Julius No, whose activities have attracted suspicion.

Bond travels to the island with his Jamaican ally Quarrel and encounters Honeychile Rider, who is collecting shells there. They are captured and taken to Dr No’s heavily guarded complex, where Bond learns that the island is being used to interfere with American missile tests through radio disruption. Dr No subjects Bond to a series of physical ordeals before Bond escapes and destroys the operation. The novel combines espionage, adventure and technological threat, while developing recurring themes of isolation, resilience and confrontation with an adversary who relies on secrecy and scientific control.
