Churchill delivered “Give Us the Tools” as a radio broadcast from London on 9 February 1941. He reviewed Britain’s position after months of German air attacks, highlighting the failure of an invasion to materialise and recent British successes against Italian forces in North and East Africa. At the same time, he warned that Germany remained capable of widening the war and attempting a renewed assault on Britain.

A central purpose of the speech was to address relations with the United States, which had not yet entered the war. Churchill argued that Britain did not require American armies but urgently needed weapons, technical equipment and shipping. He presented American material assistance as essential to sustaining and expanding the British war effort. The speech concluded with a direct appeal for American confidence and support, condensed into the phrase “Give us the tools, and we will finish the job.”
