Rams argues that designers need room to explore ideas beyond the demands of routine production work. At Braun, the design department pursued self-initiated studies alongside its normal responsibilities, giving designers an opportunity to test concepts, develop skills and investigate possibilities without an immediate commercial requirement.

He also makes clear that exploratory work does not need to result directly in a finished product to be useful. Many of the studies he describes were never manufactured, yet they influenced later product development and informed the team’s regular design decisions. Their value lay partly in the ideas, methods and insights they generated.

The quotation therefore presents experimentation as part of a wider design process rather than as a separate activity. It suggests that organisations can benefit from allowing designers some creative independence, particularly where speculative work can feed into future products, methods and decisions.
