Wish not so much to live long as to live well.
Benjamin Franklin Poor Richard’s Almanack · 1732-1758

Franklin argues that the value of a life should not be measured mainly by its length. Wanting to live for many years is understandable, but longevity alone does not determine whether those years are meaningful or well used. The saying shifts attention from duration towards the quality of a person’s conduct, relationships and purposes.

The maxim does not dismiss the value of a long life or suggest that lifespan is unimportant. Its broader point is that additional years are not automatically valuable simply because they are additional. Living well may involve acting with integrity, using time purposefully and contributing positively to others. Franklin therefore presents a good life as a matter of how one lives rather than merely how long one survives.
