Industry pays debts, despair increases them.
Benjamin Franklin Poor Richard’s Almanack · 1732-1758

Franklin contrasts productive effort with resignation when dealing with debt. Industry represents continued work, discipline and practical action, all of which can help generate income and reduce what is owed. Despair, by contrast, may lead a person to stop acting while interest, expenses or unpaid obligations continue to accumulate.

The saying does not imply that hard work alone can solve every financial difficulty, or that people in debt are responsible for all the circumstances they face. Its central point is that giving up tends to leave a problem unresolved, while constructive action can improve the chances of reducing it. Franklin’s broader lesson is that financial difficulties are better met through sustained effort, planning and attention than through resignation. Even when progress is gradual, active engagement is more likely to improve the situation than allowing obligations to grow unchecked.
