Published by ACM Books in 2021 and edited by Cliff B. Jones and Jayadev Misra, this volume surveys the life and work of Tony Hoare, one of the founders of the theory of programming. It brings together contributions from many of his colleagues and collaborators.

The book combines several kinds of material. Former students and fellow researchers offer recollections of Hoare’s career, from his years in industry to his professorships at Belfast and Oxford, alongside accounts of his personal life. These sit next to reprints of a number of his most influential papers.

A further set of chapters provides technical commentary, placing his contributions, among them Quicksort, Hoare logic and Communicating Sequential Processes, in the context of later research. Together the essays serve both as a tribute and as a scholarly assessment of his lasting influence on computer science.
