The design of products has a duty to contribute to a sustainable reduction in the number of products as a whole. Therefore the goal for product culture in the coming decades will be ‘less, but better’.
Dieter Rams Less but better · 1995

Rams argues that product design carries responsibilities beyond the appearance and immediate function of individual objects. He suggests that designers should consider the cumulative effects of producing ever more goods and should help reduce unnecessary consumption by creating fewer, better products.

The phrase “less, but better” therefore has an environmental and ethical dimension as well as an aesthetic one. It points towards products that justify their existence through usefulness, durability and lasting value rather than novelty or frequent replacement. In this view, good design can contribute to a culture in which quality and longevity matter more than the continual expansion of product choice.

The quotation also broadens the designer’s role from solving isolated product problems to considering wider patterns of production and consumption. Rams presents restraint as a principle that can shape both individual objects and the wider material culture in which they are produced and used.
