Published in 1954, Ideas and Opinions gathers essays, letters, speeches and articles written by Albert Einstein over some four decades. Much of the material comes from earlier collections, including Mein Weltbild and Out of My Later Years, and is addressed to a general readership rather than to specialists.

The book is arranged by theme. Early sections deal with personal ethics, individual freedom and the relationship between science and religion, in which Einstein sets out his belief in what he calls a cosmic religious feeling rather than a personal God. Further sections cover politics and pacifism, including his arguments for world government and nuclear disarmament, followed by writings on Jewish identity, Zionism and Germany.

A closing section presents accessible accounts of scientific questions, among them relativity, the nature of space and time, and the methods of theoretical physics.
