In the wider passage from Walden, Thoreau even warns against imitating his own way of life. His experiment at Walden is not offered as a universal model, but as an example of pursuing a deliberately chosen course. The references to building, planting and sailing stress that there is no single correct occupation or lifestyle. What matters is preserving the freedom to follow a direction that is genuinely one’s own.
